The sixth annual presentation of this popular, fast-paced, interactive program is designed to introduce the participants to the theory and the practical skills necessary to conduct impartial investigations of allegations of employee misconduct. Among other things, you will learn how to: ask effective questions, interview reluctant witnesses, obtain relevant evidence, assess credibility, and arrive at a legally defensible decision. You will also learn how to prepare and utilize all of the necessary documentation during the investigative process. Each attendee will receive program materials containing valuable checklists, forms, and templates that will assist them in carrying out investigations. Terri Abad Levenfeld is a bilingual attorney who conducts impartial workplace and Title IX investigations in both English and Spanish. Ms. Abad Levenfeld’s clients include public entities, private employers and educational institutions. Her workplace investigations involve all employee positions and elected officials, from entry-level laborers to leaders of large organizations. In her Title IX investigations, Ms. Abad Levenfeld works with students enrolled in elementary schools through post-graduate programs. Ms. Abad Levenfeld is experienced and adept at navigating the diverse and often complex issues that arise in the workplace and campus environments.  Prior to dedicating her practice to investigations, Ms. Abad Levenfeld spent over 15 years representing both plaintiffs and defendants in employment, civil rights and personal injury cases. This multi-faceted background provides her with a distinct degree of impartiality when conducting investigations. Ms. Abad Levenfeld obtained her Juris Doctor from the University of San Francisco School of Law and a Masters Degree in Spanish Translation from the Universidad Complutense de Madrid, Spain. She obtained her Bachelor of Arts Degree from the University of California at Berkeley.

Eli Makus has a broad range of experience advising employers in all industries, from healthcare to transportation. He advises employers in employment law compliance and partners with clients to identify legal risks and develop efficient, creative solutions before claims arise. Mr. Makus conducts independent and unbiased workplace investigations on complex and sensitive workplace disputes. He is also experienced in conducting regulatory compliance investigations. Mr. Makus has trained thousands of managers and human resources representatives on all aspects of employment law, including introduction to employment law, wage-hour compliance, disability accommodations and leaves of absence, federal contractor compliance, retaliation, discrimination and harassment prevention, social media in the workplace, performance management, and reductions in force. Prior to co-founding Ellis Buehler Makus, Mr. Makus served as in-house employment and medical staff counsel for a major California healthcare system. He was also an attorney with Hanson Bridgett LLP, where he provided advice to public and private employers and defended clients in state and federal court actions and administrative proceedings. Mr. Makus received his law degree from the University of California, Davis.
