Join us for a virtual offering of the popular AWI Workplace Investigation Basics Seminar. This online seminar will consist of three modules designed to introduce the participants to the theory and the practical skills necessary to conduct impartial investigations of allegations of employee misconduct. Among other things, you will learn how to: ask effective questions, interview reluctant witnesses, obtain relevant evidence, assess credibility, and arrive at a legally defensible decision. You will also learn how to prepare and utilize all of the necessary documentation during the investigative process.

Participants will be encouraged to ask questions and engage virtually with the presenters and attendees throughout each module. Each registrant will receive program materials containing valuable checklists, forms, and templates that will assist them in carrying out investigations.

Mary Egan, MRG Managing Partner, is a Private Investigator licensed in CA. Mary’s commitment to and passion for improving the quality of workplace investigations nationwide is demonstrated by her role as a founding member of the Association of Workplace Investigators (AWI). Mary’s recent work in the investigation field has been in the area of complaint intake decision trees for HR departments to ensure that only investigations which require outside party investigation are outsourced and to ensure timely, compliance-based handling of internal investigations. She advises clients regarding employment related risk mitigation, strategic planning and interest-based problem resolution. Mary and the MRG team of consultants are highly skilled at coaching, conflict resolution, negotiations, organizational assessments, project management and workplace investigations. Mary earned a BS degree in Applied Behavioral Sciences from UC Davis and MPA degree from San Francisco State University. Mary is a recipient of the Sacramento Business Journal’s Women Who Mean Business Award for 2018.
Elizabeth Gramigna is an employment lawyer focusing exclusively on workplace investigations. With a unique perspective, having litigated on behalf of both defendants and plaintiffs, and with expertise in human resources, Beth works at the forefront of emerging employment issues. Applying decades of experience, Beth provides practical, respectful, and effective solutions to conflict in the workplace; including implementing workplace policies and protocols, conducting independent investigations, and facilitating remedial measures, such as team-building, coaching, and mediation. Beth is co-founder of Tribù Partners LLP, a law firm dedicated to helping employers build workplace cultures of respect. With offices in San Francisco and New Jersey, Tribu Partners serves the needs of employers of all sizes. In addition to conducting high-level independent investigations, Tribù provides tools, templates, and ongoing individualized and specialized training and support for employers with their own investigative teams. Beth’s deep commitment to ethical, fair, and independent investigations led her to AWI, where she serves as a member of the Board of Directors, and she currently chairs the Advocacy and Annual Conference committees. Beth is also an active member of the Society of Independent Workplace Investigators, where she contributed to the published Code of Ethics for Workplace investigators. Beth is a graduate of Rutgers University School of Law.
Oliver McKinstry has over a decade of experience conducting internal and external investigations. He is currently Senior Director of People Services at DaVita, a Fortune 200 healthcare company. He has also been an investigator at a Fortune 100 aerospace and defense company. He is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania Law School and conducted external workplace investigations as part of his employment law practice at two Am Law 100 law firms. Before law school, Oliver spent two years teaching English in rural Japan. He looks forward to helping others find and hone their authentic voice in conducting investigations.
Amy Oppenheimer has over 30 years of experience in employment law as an attorney, investigator, arbitrator, mediator, trainer, and administrative law judge. She has trained employees and employers throughout the US in how to prevent harassment, investigate workplace harassment, discrimination, and retaliation, in diversity in the workplace. She has performed impartial investigations for a large range of employers, public and private, large and small. A trial qualified expert in State and Federal court, Ms. Oppenheimer has testified for plaintiffs and the defense about employment practices in preventing, responding to and investigating workplace harassment. She has testified at deposition, arbitration or trial more than 60 times. Ms. Oppenheimer is the author of numerous articles about harassment and discrimination, and is co-author of one of the few books about the practice of investigations, Investigating Workplace Harassment: How to be Fair, Thorough and Legal, (Society of Human Resource Management, 2003). She speaks frequently on these issues. Ms. Oppenheimer is the founder and past president of the Association of Workplace Investigators, Inc. (AWI), past president of Berkeley Dispute Resolution Services, and an advisor to the executive committee of the Labor and Employment Law Section of the State Bar of California.
Michael A. Robbins is President of EXTTI Incorporated—a company he founded 22 years ago. EXTTI provides Expert Testimony, Training and Investigation services in employment matters. Michael has conducted and/or supervised well over 600 workplace investigations. He has served as an expert witness in close to 650 employment cases—primarily on workplace investigation issues. Also, he has served as a Consent Decree Monitor in Federal District Courts. Prior to forming EXTTI, he was a labor & employment attorney for 20 years, including four years as in-house counsel and 16 years in two nationally recognized law firms. Mr. Robbins graduated Phi Beta Kappa from San Diego State University and received his JD degree from UCLA School of Law. He is a Past President of the Association of Workplace Investigators (AWI), a Past Chair of the Los Angeles County Bar Association’s Labor & Employment Section and a member of the California Lawyers Association Labor & Employment Executive Committee. In 2013, he was elected a Fellow of the College of Labor and Employment Lawyers.
Sue Ann Van Dermyden is a founding and Senior Partner of Van Dermyden Maddux Law Corporation, an investigations law firm. The Firm has a team of 17 attorneys dedicated almost exclusively to conducting workplace and campus investigations throughout California and Nevada. Sue Ann spent years litigating employment matters before focusing her practice on investigations. She is a founding member of the Association of Workplace Investigators, formed in 2009. Sue Ann has held almost every office and served on virtually every committee in AWI, and currently serves as the Board’s Immediate Past President. She also holds an AWI Accredited Certificate from the AWI Institute. Sue Ann is the co-chair of the Workplace Investigations Subcommittee with the American Bar Association, Employee Rights & Responsibilities section. Sue Ann has been listed in Northern California Super Lawyers every year since 2010. She regularly speaks and acts as an expert witness on investigations. Sue Ann earned her Bachelor’s Degree from CSU Chico and received her J.D. from McGeorge School of Law.
