Join us for a virtual offering of the popular AWI Public Sector Investigations Seminar designed to introduce participants to the theory and practical skills necessary to investigate allegations of employee misconduct in the public sector. Public sector workplace investigations involve procedural and substantive issues not present in other types of investigations.
In this seminar, the presenters discuss the issues unique to public sector investigations, along with general investigative planning, interviewing and reporting techniques. Among other things, you will learn how to: identify public sector issues, give the proper notifications and admonishments, conduct defensible interviews and follow-up interviews without violating state laws, assess credibility, arrive at a legally defensible decision, and issue a report to meet the agency’s needs, including evaluating and incorporating documentation gathered during the investigative process.

Brittny Bottorff, AWI-CH is an attorney workplace investigator. Brittny founded her own workplace investigations practice in 2019. Prior to that, Brittny was a partner with Maier Law Group where she conducted workplace investigations, advised clients on employment law matters, and supervised the firm’s workplace investigations team. Brittny serves as a co-convener for the downtown San Francisco meeting of the AWI SF Bay Area Local Circle.
Mary Egan, MRG Managing Partner, is a Private Investigator licensed in CA. Mary’s commitment to and passion for improving the quality of workplace investigations nationwide is demonstrated by her role as a founding member of the Association of Workplace Investigators (AWI). Mary’s recent work in the investigation field has been in the area of complaint intake decision trees for HR departments to ensure that only investigations which require outside party investigation are outsourced and to ensure timely, compliance-based handling of internal investigations. She advises clients regarding employment related risk mitigation, strategic planning and interest-based problem resolution. Mary and the MRG team of consultants are highly skilled at coaching, conflict resolution, negotiations, organizational assessments, project management and workplace investigations. Mary earned a BS degree in Applied Behavioral Sciences from UC Davis and MPA degree from San Francisco State University. Mary is a recipient of the Sacramento Business Journal’s Women Who Mean Business Award for 2018.
Donna R. Evans, AWI-CH is a Director at EXTTI, Inc, where she conducts workplace investigations, training and expert witness review. Donna has years of expertise in the following areas: (1) investigation of claims of harassment, discrimination, and employee misconduct, including complaints made under Title VII and Title IX, EEOC and FEHA; (2) executive and staff training on respectful workplace conduct, leadership, communication, ethics, performance management and bullying; and (3) expert witness testimony and consulting in sexual harassment, discrimination, retaliation and wrongful termination litigation — particularly on workplace investigation issues. Donna’s background includes civil litigation and trial experience in healthcare, insurance as well as labor and employment law. She served as a Director with Aon Corporation where she managed a work group responsible for contract review and regulatory compliance. She is an adjunct instructor at California State University of Fullerton, where she has taught labor and employment law. Donna is a member of the State Bar of California (Labor and Employment Law Section). She is a Sustaining Member of the Association of Workplace Investigators (AWI) and a Certificate Holder (AWI-CH). She has been a faculty member for AWI Training Institutes in 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019. Donna also holds Title IX certificates of training from ATIXA and T9 Mastered (basic and advanced). In addition, she also received special training from the National Center for Campus Public Safety for trauma-informed sexual assault investigation and adjudication.
Erich Knorr, AWI-CH, is a Senior Associate Attorney with Van Dermyden Maddux Law Corporation. Erich conducts workplace investigations involving discrimination, harassment, retaliation, performance issues, and misconduct. Before joining Van Dermyden Maddux Law Corporation, Erich represented public and private sector labor associations and their members in civil litigation, administrative proceedings, and labor relations.
Debra Reilly has been a California licensed attorney for 30 years. She has investigated over 900 cases throughout the US, but predominantly in California. The majority of her investigations have involved public sector employers, such as, municipalities, counties, water districts, sanitation districts, vector control districts, fire departments, police departments, universities, community college districts, school districts (elementary and secondary), transportation authorities, and the United States Postal Service. She has written numerous articles and given many training presentations to employer, attorney, and human resource groups, on conducting workplace investigations. She testifies as an expert witness in court regarding standard practices in the human resources industry for conducting workplace investigations. She is the owner of Reilly Workplace Investigations in Encinitas, CA.
Anne Rooney McCord has dedicated her career to building transformational work cultures that drive business results. She has over 20 years of Executive-level Human Resources experience in the high tech, start up and non-profit worlds and brings a client-centered vantage point to the ILG tea. Anne heads up ILG’s Strategic Services driving cultural transformation and building concrete tools and mitigation strategies for the most difficult people challenges companies face. She earned a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from the University of Colorado at Boulder and holds certifications as a Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR) and SHRM Senior Certified Professional.
