AWI Webinar: Managing an Investigation Practice in a Time of Uncertainty

Representatives from four workplace investigation firms discuss lessons learned from operating in the current COVID-19 environment. Attendees will learn about how investigation firms have weathered the current environment including how their investigators have adapted to stay at home orders. The impact of the pandemic on work and revenue will be explored. Suggestions will be provided for useful activities to be conducted during the downturn – such as using the time for training and marketing. Predictions as to how investigations will be changed will help prepare attendees for the post-COVID-19 environment.

Deborah Maddux is a founder of Van Dermyden Maddux Law Corporation and its Senior Managing Partner. Deborah’s practice focuses on conducting and overseeing workplace and Title IX campus investigations, workplace training for employees and supervisors, conducting administrative hearings, and conflict resolution training. Deborah is a trained mediator and Title IX hearing officer, and experienced in handling investigations involving the Public Safety Officers Procedural Bill of Rights Act, the Firefighters Procedural Bill of Rights, and Internal Affairs reviews. A graduate of UC Davis School of Law, she is a certified Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR), AWI-CH, and a certified EEOC investigator. Deborah is a founding member of T9 Mastered, a training firm for Title IX investigators and hearing officers. She is experienced in testifying during administrative and judicial proceedings regarding completed investigations. Prior to forming her law firm, Deborah served as Counsel to the University of California, Davis, where she was routinely called upon to advise all levels of management regarding a wide variety of employment law matters. In this role, she conducted, oversaw and managed many investigations, and advised and collaborated with management regarding the appropriate follow-up to investigative findings and conclusions. Deborah began her legal career in 1993 as a litigator with the Sacramento-based law firm Boutin, Dentino, Gibson & Di Giusto. As Senior Managing Partner, Deborah strives to position Van Dermyden Maddux as a pre-eminent provider of quality workplace and campus investigations in California. She is driven by her belief that skilled investigations can have a positive impact on employees and employers by providing opportunities for workplace transformations.
Liz Rita has been providing impartial investigations to clients in Colorado and around the country since 1994. She specializes in complex investigations in the workplace, with a special focus on high profile or high litigation risk situations. Her practice has run the gamut from class-based discrimination investigations to hostile work environment, retaliation, whistle-blower, ethics violations, rape and sexual assault and executive misconduct. She started her career at a national firm doing commercial litigation, spent the next several years at a regional Denver firm heading up their employment law practice, and in 2007 ventured out to form her own investigations firm. She has never looked back. Ms. Rita read every Nancy Drew book as a kid, as soon as it came out, which may have been a clue about where her professional life would take her. Ms. Rita wakes up every day happy to go to work, and from that perspective, considers herself a very lucky human being. Ms. Rita’s sits on the Board of Directors of the Association of Workplace Investigators, North America’s premier workplace investigator association. Her firm, Investigations Law Group, is based in Denver Colorado.
Michael A. Robbins
Michael A. Robbins is President of EXTTI Incorporated—a company he founded 22 years ago. EXTTI provides Expert Testimony, Training and Investigation services in employment matters. Michael has conducted and/or supervised well over 600 workplace investigations. He has served as an expert witness in close to 650 employment cases—primarily on workplace investigation issues. Also, he has served as a Consent Decree Monitor in Federal District Courts. Prior to forming EXTTI, he was a labor & employment attorney for 20 years, including four years as in-house counsel and 16 years in two nationally recognized law firms. Mr. Robbins graduated Phi Beta Kappa from San Diego State University and received his JD degree from UCLA School of Law. He is a Past President of the Association of Workplace Investigators (AWI), a Past Chair of the Los Angeles County Bar Association’s Labor & Employment Section and a member of the California Lawyers Association Labor & Employment Executive Committee. In 2013, he was elected a Fellow of the College of Labor and Employment Lawyers.
Keith Rohman, Immediate Past PresidentKeith Rohman has been an investigator in the public and private sectors for over 30 years. He is the founder and president of Public Interest Investigations, Inc. (PII) in Los Angeles, a firm which assists corporations, government entities and attorneys. He is the Immediate Past President of the Association of Workplace Investigators (AWI), and an adjunct professor of law at Loyola Law School, where he teaches fact investigation. Mr. Rohman has investigated many high-profile cases, including litigation related to the torture of prisoners at Abu Ghraib, allegations of shootings of Iraqis by Blackwater, Inc., the trial against Los Angeles police officers accused of beating Rodney King, and numerous capital murder cases. Mr. Rohman served as the court appointed Monitor in the matter of Pierce v. Orange County, et al., a federal ADA class action case filed on behalf of disabled inmates at the Orange County Jail. He was appointed by the L.A. County Board of Supervisors to the Equity Oversight Panel (EOP) of the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department, a civilian oversight board that oversees Internal Affairs investigations of discrimination allegations at the LASD. Under Title IX, Rohman has conducted and overseen investigations of sexual assault complaints at numerous Southern California colleges and universities. He was the principal investigator for attorneys in landmark litigation filed on behalf of service women and men sexually assaulted in the U.S. military. Mr. Rohman served as the executive director of Los Angeles City Office of Discrimination Investigation, which conducted more than 300 employment discrimination investigations, and provided recommendations to the City Council on restructuring how the city handled these matters. He is a Senior Faculty member at AWI’s accredited Training Institute for Workplace Investigators, and has conducted trainings throughout the U.S. and Canada. Mr. Rohman is a sustaining member of AWI and has been a popular speaker at AWI annual conferences, seminars, webinars, and Institutes.
