The Canadian Association of Workplace Investigators, a chapter of the Association of Workplace Investigators, is pleased to present this popular, fast-paced, interactive program designed to introduce participants to the theory and the practical skills necessary to conduct impartial investigations of allegations of employee misconduct. Among other things, you will learn how to: ask effective questions, interview reluctant witnesses, obtain relevant evidence, assess credibility, and arrive at a legally defensible decision. You will also learn how to prepare and utilize all of the necessary documentation during the investigative process. Each attendee will receive program materials containing valuable checklists, forms, and templates that will assist them in carrying out investigations. The seminar runs from 9:30 am to 4:30 pm and includes continental breakfast and lunch. Previous sessions of this seminar have sold out, so register now to secure your place.

Speakers:

Monica Jeffrey
Monica Jeffrey is a founding partner at JMJ Workplace Investigation Law LLP, one of the first law firms in Canada to devote its practice exclusively to conducting third party neutral workplace investigations. Prior to becoming a full-time workplace investigator, Ms. Jeffrey practiced in employment and labour law for 10 years, working with public and private organizations across multiple industries and sectors, including unionized and non-unionized workplaces.  She has experience in a diverse number of workplace matters and has represented and advised both employees and employers in the past. Throughout her career, Ms. Jeffrey has conducted workplace investigations including those involving grievances and formal complaints of human rights discrimination and harassment, bullying and employee misconduct. However, since she began to conduct workplace investigations on an exclusive basis in early 2013, Ms. Jeffrey has gained significant experience dealing with numerous complex issues including multiple and anonymous complainants, multiple respondents, highly politicized and sensitive matters. Ms. Jeffrey is a sustaining member of the Association of Workplace Investigators (AWI) and received a Certificate of Completion from the 2013 AWI Institute. She and her partner are the conveners of AWI’s local circle in Toronto. Ms. Jeffrey was a faculty member at the 2015 AWI Institute in Mystic, Connecticut, and is Chair of the 2016 AWI Niagara Institute.

Kevin Calder

Kevin Calder is one of North America’s most knowledgeable and well-respected workplace violence prevention and threat management specialists. His practical approach to violence prevention, conflict resolution and threat assessment is founded on 20+ years of comprehensive experience in law enforcement, security management, and performance-based training. Kevin holds an Associate Certificate in Leadership and Conflict Resolution from the Justice Institute of British Columbia and is Board Certified in security management from ASIS in CPP, PSP and CTM. In addition, Kevin is formally trained in conducting threat assessments related to violence risk (workplace, campus, individual), sexual assault, domestic violence and stalking. He regularly assesses individuals who are believed to pose a threat of significant violence (homicide/suicide). Kevin works with public and private sector clients to identify, assess and manage these individuals and to prevent violent incidents.  Kevin was a founding member of the BC Sheriff Services Integrated Threat Assessment Unit. As lead threat analyst, Kevin was responsible for assessing violence risk and developing violence prevention strategies to mitigate threats posed from a variety of sources. Kevin played a key role in the development of the Threat Management Centre of Excellence at the Justice Institute of British Columbia (JIBC).


Judy Mims
Judy Mims has been active in AWI since she joined in 2012 and attended the 2013 AWI Training Institute in Santa Barbara. Since then, she has been a speaker about internal investigations at an annual AWI conference, and co-presented an annual AWI Investigations Basics day long training in Seattle, WA. In 2014, she was selected to be a full-time faculty member for the AWI Training Institute and taught at the east coast institute in Mystic, CT. Ms. Mimis values her involvement with AWI as she appreciates conducting workplace investigations as a profession and wants to contribute to AWI’s efforts to continue setting the standard for this body of work. She brings her experience as an EEO internal investigator at the Microsoft Corporation and 20+ years in labor and employment law as in-house counsel and HR for the University of Washington and the State of Washington. In the past, Ms. Mims has served as the chair of the Executive Committee for the Labor & Employment Section of the Washington State Bar Association as well as chair for the Young Lawyers Division Board of Directors for King County in Seattle, WA. Presently, she serves on the Board of Directors for the charity WestSide Baby which provides nearly half a million diapers and essential supplies annually to underserved populations in Western Washington.
